AI as a Conversation Partner in Psychosis Care

What if technology didn’t replace human interaction, but actually helped improve it? The PPP tool makes future scenarios (prognoses) for people living with psychosis more understandable, creating a starting point for more equal choices in recovery.

THE CHALLENGE

The Psychosis Prognosis Predictor (PPP) is an AI model developed by UMC Utrecht. This model can predict the likelihood of recovery for someone experiencing psychosis within a given timeframe—focusing on symptoms, functioning, and clinical stability. Both patients and UMC Utrecht want lifestyle to become a more important part of recovery conversations, alongside standard treatment. But how do you turn complex data into a tool that helps both clinicians and patients talk meaningfully about lifestyle?

FINDINGS

The insight

A functional AI tool requires more than a strong algorithm. Clinicians want clarity and control over the inputs and outcomes. Patients need simplicity, plain language, and actionable next steps. Our research showed that the tool should not feel like a judgment, but rather an invitation to dialogue—where personal preferences are just as important as the data.

Our solution

By making lifestyle a central and natural part of treatment conversations, we encourage both patients and clinicians to look beyond just medication. We developed a vision prototype with an interface tailored to the needs of patients, supporting a more balanced interaction between them and their clinicians. We also included personalized focus areas in the tool, offering clear, actionable steps based on the individual’s results. This makes it easier to see what aspects of recovery are within someone’s own control.

THE OUTCOME

Psychose Prognose Predictor tool

The PPP tool marks a new step toward care in which data and personal interaction go hand in hand. Clinicians receive a powerful tool for exploring prognoses and discussing broader treatment options. Patients gain insight, autonomy, and a clearer perspective on their recovery journey.

We also developed an MVP that demonstrates what is already technically possible. This serves as the foundation for further development, pilot testing, and real-world implementation.

DE IMPACT

The PPP tool shows that AI doesn’t have to replace human contact—it can actually help deepen the conversation. Clinicians are supported in working with patients to explore new directions. The MVP is now being developed as a starting point for pilots in practice. We remain involved in the development process to ensure the solution stays grounded in the lived realities of both care providers and patients.
