SOCIAL DESIGN

Why it's time for more social design in real estate- and area development

It should not be the case that the neighborhood in which you live determines – in a negative way – how healthy you are, what opportunities you have and whether you feel part of society. But it is true. And we know what to do about it – for example, there is a lot of useful (behavioral) science available about how we can develop for health, social cohesion and well-being. Did you know that there is much more social cohesion in neighborhoods with front yards than in neighborhoods without them? But due to the rigidity of spatial processes, that knowledge is not being used. This article has been written together with Ruben Lentz of BLOC..

That's what we, BLOC bv and Ink Social design, want to do differently. We see many opportunities for social design and digital techniques when it comes to creating healthy living environments in a different, more inclusive way. We want to do this by thoroughly questioning the (intended) end users about their wishes at the beginning of the process – before implementation plans are drawn up. And doing user research at similar places to see what the situation is there. On the spot and in conversation with real people, instead of through literature.

We see that participation often happens too late in the process and is therefore not able to change the already established plan or solution direction towards a more people-oriented design. We want to inspire and use the creative process to figure out what makes people move.

So that we create ownership over the great projects that we develop together.

We optimize for health, social cohesion and livelihood stability, and develop environments for people in all their diversity and thus for the future. Together, we have a broad track record of projects where users spoke early on – for example in Almere, Utrecht and Amsterdam. In addition, we worked intensively in areas such as healthcare, the social domain and sustainability. As a result, we see a lot of opportunities and we would like to use that valuable knowledge in spaces where we can also make a difference.

That is why we now want to talk to a number of municipalities and/or corporations. About promising but vulnerable neighborhoods that deserve an open, engaged view.

We see many leads - just think of the Environmental Act - and would like to connect with municipalities to see whether and how this can help local residents.
